Grayceon Track Posted!

San Francisco’s Grayceon are gearing up for the release of their new two-song album, Pearl and The End Of Days, on February 12th. Today, the band is excited to unveil the first track, “Pearl”, on Alarm-Magazine.com.

Listen to Pearl here here.

Pre-order the vinyl of Grayceon “Pearl and the End of Days” here

Recorded with Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden Studios in the Bay Area in the Fall of 2012, Pearl and The End Of Days is up for pre-order now at Store.theFlenser.com and available on digital and vinyl formats. Check out videos of Grayceon in the studio now on their Youtube page as well.

Over the course of seven years and three proper full-lengths, Grayceon, comprised of one guitar (Max Doyle), one cello (Jackie Perez Gratz, who, along with her cello, has appeared on albums from bands like Om, Agalloch, Cattle Decapitation, Giant Squid, Amber Asylum and more), and one set of drums (Zack Farwell) has managed to tackle the full spectrum of heavy music’s extensive clutch of emotions. Pummeling sludgy metal quickly carves into fiery post-punk that’s knotted within epic experimental rock, and it’s all blanketed with the additional allure of ample use of mellow stretches to fully round out the pattern. Words such as “enterprising,” “unconventional” and “dynamic” have all been utilized in an attempt to encapsulate the band’s overall design, but the absolute consensus remains: Grayceon thrives as a splendid anomaly amongst an ever-increasing sea of peers.

Pearl and The End of Days is a 30-minute album comprised of two sprawling epics that bend the concentration closer toward Grayceon’s rockier roots. Cellist Jackie Perez Gratz commented, “We wrote these songs over the course of the past two years, on the tails of the release of our third full-length, All We Destroy, and a time during which I was pregnant for nine months and my daughter was born. All three of us went into a collective hibernation where we weren’t playing out much and didn’t have any big album plans.” She continued, “Lack of specific goals and immediate expectations gave us the freedom to penetrate a newfound energy in our music. These two new songs, ‘Pearl’ and ‘The End of Days’, are the expression of that energy: more rock based, overall faster tempos, and a lighter heart lyrically. The EP embodies Grayceon’s musical style and challenges, but the songs, while taking on a different mood than previous material, still allow plenty of opportunity for head banging.”

BOTANIST ‘IV: MANDRAGORA’ announcement

BOTANIST, THE ONE-MAN, HAMMERED DULCIMER BLACK METAL BAND FROM SAN FRANCISCO, TO RELEASE NEW FULL-LENGTH ALBUM
‘IV: MANDRAGORA’, COMING FEBRUARY 19TH, 2013 FROM FLENSER RECORDS

Botanist, the unconventional one-man black metal band featuring vocals, drums, and hammered dulcimer instrumentation, is gearing up to release its fourth album, IV: Mandragora, on February 19th from experimental metal label The Flenser. Combining lyrical creativity and musical ingenuity, IV: Mandragora is a concept record on the alchemical creation of a mandrake, and how The Botanist is instructed on raising an army of mandrakes to wipe out humanity. The songs of Botanist are told from the perspective of The Botanist, a crazed man of science who lives in self-imposed exile, as far away from Humanity and its crimes against Nature as possible. In his sanctuary of fantasy and wonder, which he calls the Verdant Realm, he surrounds himself with plants and flowers, finding solace in the company of the Natural world, and envisioning the destruction of man. There, seated upon his throne of Veltheimia, The Botanist awaits the day when humans will either die or kill each other off, which will allow plants to make the Earth green once again.

Botanist’s previous releases, I: The Suicide Tree, II: A Rose From The Dead (released July 2011 on tUMULt), and III: Doom in Bloom (TotalRust) have seen much critical acclaim; landing on lists such as NPR’s 25 Best Metal Albums of 2011, Metal Sucks Top 15 Metal Albums of 2011, Metal Injection’s Top 10 Releases of 2011, and an honorable mention on Pitchfork’s Top 40 Albums of 2011. The next chapter of Botanist, IV: Mandragora, is an eccentric and remarkable album and is sure to turn heads in 2013.

More information on IV: Mandragora and track premieres coming soon – in the meantime, check out IV: Mandragora album cover art by M.S. Waldron above.

…music that disobeys every rule about black metal, sounds nothing like black metal, and yet can’t really be called anything but black metal. In that way, Botanist could be the fullest realization of the post-black metal concept yet, and that makes the future awfully exciting. – The Quietus

Bosse-de-Nage iii DLP statement & Deafheaven/Bosse-de-Nage update

Bosse-de-Nage iii DLP update:

Many of you have been asking about the Bosse-de-Nage “iii” DLP album. We apologize for the delay.

In August we approved the test pressing of the album. They sounded great. Unfortunately, the final production copies of the album contained very serious defects. The records sound bad! The Flenser has refused to sell these defective copies to you. We have since returned two production runs of the album to the manufacturer due to the same defects. Currently we awaiting a new cut of the album.

The Bosse-de-Nage “iii” DLP will be released once we are confident that all copies of the album meet our standards. If anyone who has pre-ordered the album would like a refund please get in touch through the contact form our website. Otherwise, all pre-orders will be filled once the album has arrived in excellent condition.

Deafheaven/Bosse-de-Nage update:

The Deafheaven/Bosse-de-Nage split is expected to arrive next week. We have a great many of pre-orders and it will take us some time to get fullly caught up on shipping. Flenser is run by one person and these things take time but all order will ship!

We have added few more copies of the colored version to The Flenser store but don’t expect them to last.

Worm Ouroboros is a trio from the San Francisco Bay Area. The band is Lorraine Rath (Amber Asylum, The Gault) on bass and vocals, Jessica Way (Barren Harvest) on guitar and vocals, and Aesop Dekker (Ludicra/Agalloch) on drums. “Come The Thaw” is their second release, a gauzy, ethereal piece of delicate darkness and gentle gloom; it is that rare album that dwells upon the outer edges of heavy metal, yet possesses enough raw power and beauty to coax both the metal faithful and those who prefer lighter fare under its spell.
